During the pandemic, many American workers have been forced to choose between their health and their jobs. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Suresh Naidu, Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Columbia University, argues that a tight labor market—where there are jobs for all who want them—would give workers the bargaining power with their employers to ensure adequate health and safety protections, as well as better pay and benefits.
