Who owns knowledge?

The Institute for New Economic Thinking attended the third Turin International Festival of Economics from 30 May – 2 June 2024, organized by Laterza. The Festival, which this year ran under the theme “Who owns knowledge?” featured a presentation by Nobel Laureate Michael Spence on his new co-authored book Permacrisis moderated by President of INET Rob Johnson with discussant Marco Magnani; and a discussion on The Coming AI Economic Revolution by Michael Spence and James Manyika (SVP of Research, Technology and Society at Google) moderated by Rob Johnson. Other notable presenters included: Tito Boeri (Scientific Director of the Festival), David Card, Joel Mokyr, and David Yang.

In addition to attending the main Festival sessions, the Young Scholars Initiative of the Institute for New Economic Thinking hosted the YSI @ Turin Festival of Economics event. This event featured young scholar sessions in parallel to the Festival, which included paper presentation sessions by young scholars; sessions on Early Career Challenges, and project brainstorming, as well as a mentorship session with Rob Johnson. This year’s YSI cohort comprised 30 young scholars from over 12 countries including Argentina, Brazil, China, Hungary, India, Italy, Poland, South Africa, The Gambia, Uganda, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The engagement of YSI in the Festival allowed for diverse perspectives and meaningful intergenerational discussions regarding the future of work and the impact of AI; a just green transition; and addressing global inequalities to mention a few.
