The global economy appears to be stuck in a pattern of low growth, low inflation and unresolved debt burdens. Is this a result of policy mistakes, or have the fundamental dynamics of the economy shifted into an era of little or no growth known as secular stagnation? Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Institute for New Economic Thinking Chairman Adair Turner discuss the primary drivers of our current malaise, how central banks can cope with stagnation, and whether major policy initiatives — such as more aggressive fiscal stimulus — should be deployed in response. This event marks the launch of a research program into the secular stagnation question, the results of which will be released in 2017.
