There was a good story in Friday's New York Times that highlighted "This Time is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly," a recent best selling book co-authored by an INET advisor, Harvard University's Kenneth Rogoff.

For the book, Rogoff and his co-author, Carmen Reinhart from the University of Maryland, delved deep into documents and debt records, meticulously cataloging the bad decisions that led to the biggest financial collapses in recent history.
As The Times puts it, the book "zeroes in on some of the broader shortcomings of their trade — thrown into harsh relief by economists’ widespread failure to anticipate or address the financial crisis that began in 2007."
"This Time is Different" argues that perhaps this time is not different - that the financial collapse that we are currently witnessing is made up of events that have been played out similarly before, albeit at different times and in different contexts.
Here at INET, we're also very interested in critically analyzing the events of recent economic history, especially those that led up to the current crisis. This was one of the main subjects of our inaugural conference at King's College, which is now available in its entirety in video format on our website.
In fact, you can watch Ken's presentation at the conference, rhetorically titled "Where are we now?" In the video, he discusses how debts and deficits influence global financial stability.
