Ken Rogoff Awarded prestigious Deutsche Bank Prize in Financial Economics

INET Advisory Board Member Kenneth Rogoff was awarded the Deutsche Bank Prize in Financial Economics yesterday for his pioneering contributions to the field of international finance and macroeconomics. The relatively new prize is given every two years to an economist whose life work has had a marked influence on other research, and made an impact on fundamental advances in economic theory and practices.

“Kenneth Rogoff has not only contributed pioneering works of the greatest academic importance, he has also made his findings accessible to a broad public,” said Jury Chairman Use Walz, who also is the director of the Center for Financial Studies, which gives out the awards.

The board cited Rogoff’s most recent book that he co-authored with Carmen Reinhart, “This time is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly,” as an example of how his work can be both accessible and influential on policy makers. The empirical analysis of financial crises over the last 800 years gives great insight into the global finical crisis that started in 2008. Rogoff will be presented the award at an academic symposium focused on his lifetime of work in Frankfurt on September 22, 2011. Rogoff currently is Thomas D Cabot Professor of Public Policy in Economics Department of Harvard University. He has previously taught at the University of California, Berkeley, and Princeton University. He also served as the Chief Economist and Director of Research at the International Monetary Fund from 2001 to 2003.

“Kenneth Rogoff has revolutionized modern international finance. His penetrating research has changed the way we think about all the interlinkages of the world’s economies and the problems faced by policy makers in a global economy, said Robert Shiller, the last recipient of the Deutsche Bank Prize. “Writing with a perspicacious and graceful manner that makes complex ideas seem simple, his path breaking research has an enormous audience. Rogoff is a guiding force for our age.”

Rogoff is also on active member of the INET Advisory Board and he helped kick off our Inaugural conference at King’s College, University of Cambridge, last spring. Below you can see his talk:
